OAK TREE EDUCATION
Think Big and Follow Your Passion
The world we live in reflects the history of humanity. Our predecessors’ imaginations and efforts to give expression to them have led us to a technologically advanced world where we enjoy convenience and comfort that no one in the past experienced. And, we ourselves are a part of this history, bridging yesterday and tomorrow. ‘Creating a better world for posterity’ has been a common theme woven in our history regardless of race, era, geographical locations or any other differences we may have. Yet, defining ‘a better world’ is getting increasingly complex as changes that have been incessantly introduced to our lives in recent years have also left us with new issues and controversies.
The driving force behind these changes we’ve been experiencing is technological advancement as represented by ICT, AI and Big Data. They will keep transforming the way we ‘do things’, leading us to a newer way of life. This century might even let us see liberation from a centuries-old, if not millennia-old, concept of ‘earn a living’ as discussed in various parts of the world today. When revolutionary changes like this are emerging, ushering us out of the convention, some fundamental questions hit us – ‘how do I live in this new world?’ and ‘what can I do?’ I asked myself these questions, and what I found in me was: ‘Think Big’ and ‘Follow your passion’.
Think Big (no matter how old/young you are!) and ‘Follow your passion’, for ‘passion’ is what constitutes a fundamental part of us, and what will be a force that propels us into the direction where we will make unique, inspiring contributions to people of this generation and the next.
I have always known that my passion lies in education and this is where I continue to dedicate myself in the new era unfolding before us. Having served a university, a private training institution and an IB World School over the years, I’ve found education is not exempted from changes; rather it perhaps is at the forefront of changes - where globalization, technological transformation and an array of new businesses are taking place every day. It is no longer a new thing that Asian students who have never left their countries score very high in SAT, that BYOD is practised at school, and that a new education chain goes public.
Education, though its contents, goals and pedagogy change with the times, has always played a fundamental role in the development of human beings and it will continue to do so no matter how technologically advanced our society becomes, or how the way we live changes. ‘A better world’, after all, may be defined differently from person to person, but I believe every person has the right to think about what it is, and should have the knowledge and skills to realize what they envision, and this would be only possible through education. My dream is to give every child access to quality education, for those children with global perspective, broad knowledge and skillsets will be contributing members of the globalized century. This is a big mission which requires support and collaboration from many. The future of our children lies in our visions and actions today. I am sure together we can make positive changes that lead to a brighter future for a great many.
